Track beside the Rape Field, New House Farm

This little painting I started when I did a study of the scene in the middle of May. It was a fabulous warm day - the perfect weather for painting en plein air. A week later with similar weather conditions I returned to New House Farm, Bodiam and set about this painting - having familiarised myself with the subject a week earlier. A few later adjustments to shadows once the paint had become touch dry and the painting was complete.

It was a wonderful scene to behold. With the rape in full flower and the steep track at the side of the field cast with dappled shade and shadows from the trees. Rape flowers have such a vibrant and cheerful colour. Seeing them always reminds me the warmth of summer is on its way.

Oil on board, 30 x 20 cms.
